The unsung heroes of the wine experience

The unsung heroes of the wine experience

For many wine lovers, the exploration of wine typically starts with a trip to a tasting room.

These sanctuaries of viticulture highlight not only exceptional wines but also the dedication of hardworking staff behind the scenes. As the front-of-house team, it is our goal to create an unforgettable experience for each guest. Our motto, “even if it is our 100th time doing the same task, it is someone else's first time experience”.

One of the primary roles of a tasting room manager is supervising tasting room staff. This involves coordinating with the cashiers and the storeroom operator to maintain a seamless flow of activities. As a tasting room manager, one oversees daily operations, engages with guests, and shares captivating stories, focused on bringing the wines to life and inviting guests to appreciate not just the flavours but also the rich narratives behind each bottle.

Communication is critical; therefore, it is essential to keep wine information updated across multiple platforms. We want potential visitors to understand what to expect so they can plan their visits accordingly. Additionally, the role involves reporting sales figures and monitoring trends to assess which wines are popular and what customers are gravitating towards.

Social media is another vital frontier. Our social media accounts, such as Instagram and Facebook, attract wine enthusiasts, which helps to build a community and promote our Cellars and wine. Anyone can join the group and stay in the loop. Networking with other wine organizations and restaurants further expands such outreach efforts, fostering connections that lead to exciting collaborations.

Holding tastings is an integral part of the role, too. Our tastings are carefully curated to educate our guests about the wines, but also encourage them to explore different pairings and be adventurous with their choices. Occasionally, we host tastings for large groups, especially during flower season, and that is when you get to feel the pressure, but it is also very exciting to engage with customers and hear all their interesting stories from all over the world.

Stock management is another key responsibility. Our storeroom operator plays a vital role here, conducting inventory assessments and packaging orders for guests to take home and doing so promptly, ensuring the tasting room is always well-equipped and that visitors are pleased with their orders.

Communication does not end with guests; newsletters and articles like this one help keep the customer base informed about new releases, seasonal promotions, and events, keeping the enthusiasm alive even when they are not on-site.

Lastly, no visitor wants to drink from dusty glasses. Our cleaning staff, often unseen, are crucial in ensuring that every glass sparkles brightly, reflecting the attention to detail and commitment to quality that a good wine experience demands.

In essence, the world of wine extends far beyond the bottle. At Klawer Cellars, it is shaped by a team of dedicated individuals, each contributing their unique skills. From the storeroom operator to the tasting room manager and the cleaning staff, every role harmonizes to create a welcoming and engaging environment that every wine enthusiast will cherish. In this orchestrated effort lies the heart of the wine experience, where stories unfold with each sip.
