Many of us don’t like winter. Most probably because those fun days in the sun are fewer, those days where you have a little picnic and a bottle of wine disappear in the mist. Those days where your biggest concern is wearing a hat and some sunglasses.
The summer and spring seasons at the winery are upbeat and busy. Everyone is out and about, also a little dehydrated and sun burnt, if you live in Namaqualand. But people love summer and going to the beach every other weekend.
Farmers are harvesting grapes and truck loads of grapes are dropped off for crushing and pressing at the cellars. Summer and spring is where the hard work begins. It’s the season where farmers and winemakers alike wake up at the break of dawn to rush in their best batch of grapes.
Slowly things start to quiet down during autumn and winter, which might make some people feel a little down after all the excitement. Winter is merely a resting season. The season where everything slows down a little. The vineyards rest and save all their energy for the next harvest. The winemakers are planning their next season with a cup of warm tea or coffee.
This season is crucial for Namaqualand. Its when everyone hopes and prays for rain for the vineyards to wake up and bloom and for the wild flowers to invite guests from all over the world.
During this slow season we should take a break, too. Wear a cozy jacket and have a warm cappuccino, cuddle up with your special person under a snuggly blanket as you sip away on some dessert wine. There is something magical about winter, maybe it’s the crisp air in the mornings or the fuzzy feeling you get when your hands fold around a cup of warm coco or red wine by the fire place. Aaah… now that’s a winter at the winery.
